Going green

Art and nature are coming together at the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky. UK alumnus and gardener Jon Carloftis ’86 CIS is giving a unique gift to the museum: more green. Green in a plant sense, that is.

Carloftis will be creating a “living exhibition” around each of the ten sculptures displayed in the art museum’s outdoor sculpture garden. His gift also includes a special planting for the museum’s entrance. Each plant display surrounding the sculptures is being designed by Carloftis to allow viewers to interpret each piece to its best advantage.

Carloftis is well known for creating works of art with plants and nature as his canvas. A Kentucky native, he is an award-winning landscape designer, author, horticultural entrepreneur and gardener to several celebrities.

In the next few weeks, be sure to stop by the museum to catch a glimpse of the sculpture garden redesign. We dropped by the other day and saw the ‘pear’ sculpture with some whimsical trees that were recently planted. We can’t wait to see the rest of the transformation!

Espaliered pear trees surround the pear sculpture. These trees will eventually bear fruit.
